Post-Jam #2 - Controls!
Boson Hell » Devlog
This is a small patch to add some different input options. Unsurprisingly, both feel worse to play than mouse and keyboard.
Features
- Controller: This was pretty easy to implement, just adopting twinstick shooter controls and using shoulder buttons for fire.
- Mobile: I went back and forth on this one, trying a twinstick style with virtual joysticks or a single joystick on the side with touch fire, but ended up with a "drag to move" type of controls that I think fits pretty well. The main thing I wanted to have was using pinch/pan motions to change size, and that feels pretty good. The only thing I may tweak in the future is the threshold for the drag needed to move, since it's pretty twitchy right now
For the future
- I actually decided against implementing pickups. This was after all one of the main points that I could've implemented during the jam and what I think would be a good counter-balance to the positive feedback loop of getting hurt and making it harder to maneuver with the smaller arena. However, I don't ant to work on this game anymore, since I don't connect with the bullet hell genre that strongly and I think it's good to preserve the Jam version of this game.
- I guess for future jams I'll try to explore a non-bullet hell style of arcade-y score chasing game. Last year it was pretty accidental, but now it makes it two GMTKs in a row that I've done a bullet hell. I'll try to explore different game actions and see what I can come up with...
